July 20โ26ยฐC but mountain mornings can be 12ยฐC. Light fleece + waterproof jacket essential.
For volcano hikes and trail walks. Non-slip soles โ trails can be slippery after rain.
UV is strong at altitude. SPF 50+, hat, sunglasses. Long daylight hours (4:30amโ7:30pm).
Hokkaido has horseflies and mosquitoes in summer, especially near lakes and forests.
Ubigi or Airalo eSIM for Japan. Essential for Google Maps and booking on the go.
Bring enough prescription meds. Japanese pharmacies may not carry the same brands.
Tent, sleeping bag, camp stove, headlamp. Or rent: many shops in Sapporo rent full kits.
Essential for Shiretoko hiking. Bear bells available at any outdoor shop in Hokkaido (~ยฅ500).
